About Alpha School

Alpha school was originally established in 1970 to deal with the problems of teenagers at risk substance abusers. Presently under the dynamic leadership of its Chief Executive officer, Barry "Mr. B" Addison, CPP, CAS, RAS, it operates a prescriptive education program, and is licensed by the New York State Office of Substance Abuse (QASAS), The Department of Heath and the Department of Education. It provides prevention, drug free outpatient, and is staffed by licensed and credentialed clinicians.

Alpha School's primary strength lies in the scope and years of experience in providing quality substance abuse intervention services. By utilizing the expertise of its seasoned staff, Alpha School has taught thousand f youngsters, many of whom are truants and dropouts involved in negative activities, to more effectively recognize risks and develop routine responses. As a result, youngster involved in the Alpha School experience have learned to channel their energies toward developing higher self-esteem, which leads to productive and meaningful lives. Alpha School is currently a major participant of East New York at work initiative which is funded by the City Council of New York. Training and placement are primary objectives of this initiative.

Alpha School maintains and continues to develop linkages with variety of social services agencies, community organizations, law enforcement, probation parole, schools and housing developments. Over the past 34 years Alpha School has been recognized as the primer provider of intervention and prevention services for youths and adults residing primarily in the Brownsville/East New York sections of Brooklyn, but not excluding any other Boroughs. As both a service provider and an educator, it has successfully molded the resilience, character, and lifestyle of youth and others who exhibit "at risk" behavior and are potentially susceptible to AOD use and abuse. Through its vast linkages and commitment to community, Alpha School is easily recognizable and readily available. Its alternative high school program in collaboration with the Department of Education's Off Educational services and Suspension programs ensure that youths unable to succeed in a tradition school setting can avail themselves of a continuing educational experience and simultaneously address risk factors and difficulties in each of their respective domains.

After visiting Alpha School, former Mayor of Atlanta, Ga., U.S Ambassador Andrew Young wrote to a friend: "One of the outstanding educational experiments in the country is Alpha School down in Brooklyn. I hope one day that the curriculum process of all American education will resemble that of Alpha School."
